The Secret of the Fox – fur in watercolor and mixed media

Paint a beautiful, atmospheric fox in watercolor and mixed media, and learn how to build up its soft, lifelike fur layer by layer. We’ll combine soft watercolor effects with PanPastel, eraser techniques, and fine details in colored pencil—all in a calm and intuitive process filled with texture, the beauty of nature, and little creative surprises.

In this atmospheric watercolor and mixed media lesson, we’ll paint a beautiful fox sitting quietly among grasses, leaves, and soft colors—almost as if it’s keeping a little secret of its own.
We’ll focus especially on the fox’s warm, vibrant fur and explore how you can build it up layer by layer. From the first soft, flowing washes of color to fine strands of fur, light, shadow, and tiny details that slowly bring the fox to life against the dreamy background.
Along the way, we’ll combine watercolor pencils and watercolor techniques with dry pastel or PanPastel, eraser techniques, and water-resistant colored pencils. The materials work together, allowing us to create both the soft transitions in the fur and the fine, lively textures on top.
We’ll also work with soft and sharp edges, lifting techniques, splatters, watercolor blooms, and small organic details in the vegetation. The background is kept looser and more impressionistic, while we gradually bring more focus and detail into the fox’s face and fur.
At the same time, this is an open and intuitive painting process, where we’re not trying to copy our reference exactly. We use it as inspiration, experiment along the way, and make room for the little surprises that can happen when water, pigments, and different materials come together.
