Art and Emotion: How to Paint What You Feel

Recently, I received a really interesting question about the art-making process:

“Do you paint your feelings — and if so, how?”

My short answer is yes. Yes, I do paint my feelings. But the longer answer is where it gets more interesting.

Feelings are Always Present in Art

I believe that, in some way, your feelings are always present in your art. When you sit down to create, you sit with yourself. Your feelings and thoughts weave themselves into the work almost automatically. It’s part of the process.

For me, symbolism plays a big role. Not in the sense of inserting obvious “symbols,” but more in the way that everything we choose to depict can symbolize something. A rabbit, a woman, a tree, the stars — all of these can carry meaning. What I paint often symbolizes something personal, but it’s always a little bit encrypted.

And that mystery is part of the beauty. As people often say about good art: it opens more questions than it answers.

Expression, Mood, and Color

The way I express myself changes depending on my mood. Some days I work loosely and expressively, other days my lines are more delicate. Either way, the feeling of the day is layered into the work.

Color also carries emotions. Each shade can symbolize something different, not just for me, but also for whoever is looking at the piece.

The Mystery of Interpretation

And here’s what I find fascinating: what a painting means to me as the artist is never exactly the same as what it means to the viewer. Someone might see my work in a gallery, online, or even in a friend’s home — and their own feelings and experiences will shape their interpretation. In a way, my work mirrors their feelings as much as it reflects mine.

That mystery — the layering, the encryption, the questions — is what makes art so endlessly exciting and alive.

Closing Thoughts

So yes, I do paint my feelings. But even more, I believe feelings are always woven into art, whether we try to put them there or not.

I’d love to know what you think: Do you paint or draw your feelings? Leave me a comment below — I’d be so happy to hear your thoughts.

Until next time: happy drawing, happy painting.
